Philosophy and Genesis
Water is the main inspiration behind the garden, both because it
is the key to life for everyone on the planet and because it
enhances our lives. We are all drawn to inspiring waterfalls,
babbling streams and snow covered landscapes.
The aim of the garden is to highlight the value of water and how
it holds the key to the good life. The garden attracts visitors and
engages their interest, inspiring them to consider how water can be
recycled and conserved in their own gardens without compromising on
design.
The ‘sardine tin’ water feature at the centre of the garden is
inspired by a quote from playwright Alan Bennett: "Life is like a
tin of sardines . . . we’re all of us looking for the key."
The quote is carved into the paving in front of a seating area
where visitors can enjoy a view of the water feature. They have to
search harder to find the key of the quote, which is represented by
a sculpture nestled in among the salad and vegetable planters.
Other quotes that inspired the design are found at different
points around the garden, such as:
"The good life comes from what we care about."(Rollo May)
"There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if
you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find
them smiling." (Mirabel Osler)
